Startups in the thin air

Addis Ababa's founders are building for a market of 120 million people with a median age under twenty.

The Ethiopian technology sector is young in both senses: the companies are new, and so are their customers. Fintech, logistics, agritech and digital health dominate, because those are the sectors where the friction is largest.

Mobile money adoption has changed the addressable market faster than any policy could. A founder who needed a bank branch three years ago now needs a phone number.

What still binds

  • Foreign exchange access for cloud and hardware costs
  • Payment rails that clear reliably at scale
  • Senior engineering talent competing with diaspora salaries
  • Late-stage capital willing to price Ethiopian risk

None of these is unusual for a market at this stage. All of them are solvable with policy that treats software as an export sector rather than an import cost.
